Description:  A family full of easy-to-grow, adaptable shrubs with fluffy white blooms and colorful foliage.  Great for flexibility and dramatic appeal.   Plant with gold, variegated or silver foliage plants for the best effect in the landscape. Photo courtesy of Proven Winners.

Soil Preference: Tolerates some drought and dry soil but prefers an acidic to slightly alkaline well-drained soil.
Light Requirements: Full Sun

Care:

Summer Wine forms its flower buds in later summer and then flowers in early June. The best time to prune is it after it blooms, from mid-June to mid-August.  Cease pruning in mid-august to allow time for the flower buds to form prior to winter. 

Fertilize with Holly-tone or Plant-tone as recommended.

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Amber Jubilee'
Common Ninebark, Eastern Ninebark

Description:  Amber Jubilee was selected for its striking foliage in glowing tones of orange, yellow and gold. Rounded and dense in habit, this shrub with its bold array of colors will stand out in your garden border or make for an eye-catching hedge. Delicate white blooms are produced in spring, and fall foliage is highlighted with tones of red and purple, making this ninebark appealing over the entire season. Plant in full sun for best performance.

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diablo'
Common Ninebark, Eastern Ninebark
zones 2-7
Description:  Intense reddish-purple foliage on upright arching branches.  Provides excellent color contrast when used in the border or as a hedge or screen.  Clusters of creamy white flowers appear in summer.  Full sun for best color.

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Devil'
Common Ninebark, Eastern Ninebark

Description:  Much like Diablo but just smaller in every way; smaller leaves, smaller stature, smaller flower clusters. Leaf color is different in that its brighter red and glossy. Stems glow red & leaves turn green on the interior of the plant. Good choice for tucking in mixed borders and the foundation.

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Summer Wine'
Common Ninebark, Eastern Ninebark

Description:  An exciting improvement to Ninebark, Summer Wine combines the fine texture and compact branching of Physocarpus 'Nana' with the dark foliage of Physocarpus Diabolo. Smaller than other ninebark varieties, Summer Wine is an easy way to introduce wine colored foliage into the home garden. It is fast growing and has few, if any, pest problems. Its graceful, arching habit makes if very appealing in the landscape. It adds beautiful color and vibrancy to your garden, especially in spring. In early June it blooms with white button-like flowers that accent the leaves nicely. Pruning and other maintenance is rarely needed.  This is a trouble-free addition to either the home or commercial landscape.

Description:  An extra bushy Ninebark with small, refined leaves. The dark bronze-maroon foliage is colorful all season, and contrasts beautifully with the white flowers in late spring. The flower show is exceptional, with dainty flowers blooming up and down the stem in a very showy display.
