Description:
The popularity of these big, bold plants has grown over the few years. Many people remember Hydrange7as from their childhood. Today, we're falling in love with them all over again. Hydrangeas should be sited in moist, rich garden soil in partial sun to fairly deep shade. Hydrangeas can be categorized into 4 different types: Mophead, lacecap, Oakleaf and panicle. Each type has its own set of pruning rules and growing requirements.

Soil Preference:	Prefers moist, well-drained soil with a pH of acidic.
Light Requirements:	Partial Sun to Shade. Some types can tolerate full sun in moist soil.
Attributes:	Showy flowers
Pests:	Aphids, rose chafers, scales and mites
Diseases:	Bacterial wilt, bud or flower blight, powdery mildew, rust
Care:	Fertilize with a product for acid loving plants such as Holly-tone. Follow guidelines on package as well as our Water & Fertilizer schedule. Pruning:	Since Bigleaf (H. macrophylla), Oakleaf (H. quercifolia) and Lacecap (H. serrata) Hydrangeas bloom on large buds formed on previous season's growth, any pruning should be done immediately after flowering. However, we suggest not to trim these types of Rhododendrons. Panicle types (H. paniculata) can be trimmed back in early spring to promote new growth and better flower production.

Climbing Hydrangea Hydrangea anomala - Best grown in well-drained soil in a part shade area. Will cling and climb via aerial rootlets, attaching itself to many types of surfaces to help it climb. Once established, this vine is quite busy and will require a strong support structure. Can be particularly effective grown against walls (brick, stone or wood) where it can cling and grow vertically. Can also be grown on other types of structures such as arbors, fences, trunks or trees or sprawled along walls, or grown as a ground cover.

	Description: An upright vine with clusters of fragrant flowers and showy bracts from late spring to early summer. Excellent for massive effect on brick or stone walls, arbors and trees. Becomes quite woody so it will need ample support.

Smooth Hydrangea Hydrangea arborescens - The biggest flowers in the Hydrangea family can be found on this group. Flowers up to 10" across in either white or pink shades bloom every year even after severe pruning or cold winters. These are commonly grown as a hedge as well. They prefer morning sun and afternoon shade or dappled shade all day. One challenge of growing this group is the weight of the blooms. They become so large and heavy that they tend to bend to the ground. To help with this problem, you can plant them near a fence, plant a few of them together so they can support one another or surround a young plant with a wire fence.

	Description: A breeding breakthrough. Finally, an arborescens type of hydrangea with a different flower color than white. Large, full mophead flowers that are a rich dark pink color, bloom from early summer through autumn. Forms a tidy rounded mound of green foliage which blends beautifully in the foundation or even a perennial garden.

	Description: An Annabelle Hydrangea with pink flowers!... and produces new flowers right up until frost. Unlike many Hydrangeas, the flower buds are produced on new wood, so it will produce flowers even if the stems die back to the ground by extreme weather.

Mophead Hydrangea.... Hydrangea macrophylla - The most popular kind of Hydrangeas grown in home gardens. Most mopheads are pink or blue in color with just a few available in white. For information on changing flower color by altering the soil pH, click here. Be sure to grow in an area with protection from hot afternoon sun and keep the soil moist and water in dry weather. Mopheads do not need to be trimmed back but if you do need or want to trim them to shape, do this before any new buds set (by July). For any of the Hydrangeas in the Endless Summer family, trimming can be done at any time as they set buds on both new and old wood. The recommended way to trim a Hydrangea is to cut (or even pull) out any dead stems in early spring before leaves sprout. Dead stems will contain no flower or leaf buds. This will help to "clean up" the look of the plant.

Panicle Hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata - An easy type of Hydrangea to grow, the paniculata group can tolerate more sun and more pruning practices then typical other types. Prune in fall, winter or early spring. Be advised, many varieties often get very tall, to 8-10 feet tall and wide.

The autumn display of chartreuse and pink blooms on the same plant is breathtaking! The color makes a great addition to the garden and it blends wonderfully with all other colors. Use 'Limelight', either fresh or dried, in bouquets to make a unique floral design. This is an easy to grow plant with reliable flowering and flower color regardless of soil pH or winter temperatures. 	Description: A sweet compact hardy Hydrangea from Belgium. Little Lamb is unique because its flower petals are the smallest and most delicate of any Hydrangea. These little flowers are held in tight, but delicate flower heads that look like dancing lambs floating above this compact shrub. This special shrub blooms in mid-summer and lasts into autumn. The pure white blooms light up a garden and blend wonderfully with all other colors. Flowers may turn pink in the fall. Use Little Lamb in bouquets either fresh or dried to make a unique floral design. This is an easy to grow plant with reliable flowering and flower color regardless of soil pH. The blooms are well distributed making a very nice plant and display. Tolerates sun.

	Description: Compared to its famous sibling ‘Limelightâ€™, Little Lime hardy hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) may seem like a pipsqueak. Donâ€™t let this petite shrub fool you. While maintaining its short stature of 3-5â€™ tall and wide, it really packs a visual punch in the garden. In summer, lime green blooms open on strong stems - no drooping here. As it ages, rich pink coloring emerges to prolong the show through fall. Little Lime hydrangea is small enough to grow in containers and also stands out as a bold mass planting. Its bright bloom coloration makes it an excellent choice for cut flower gardens and can be used fresh or dried. This reliable performer blooms on new wood, so a quick trim in late winter or early spring will encourage fresh growth and an abundance of buds. Like most hardy hydrangeas, it is hardy to Zone 3 and does best in full sun or part shade. Summer flowers open soft green and turn pink and burgundy in fall.

	Description: The first to bloom! Quick Fire blooms about a month before other Hydrangea paniculata (hardy hydrangea) varieties. Extend the hydrangea season in your garden with a planting of Quick Fire Hydrangea. Flowers open white then turn pink, and will be an extremely dark rosy-pink in the fall. Quick and easy to grow. The flowers on Quick Fire are not affected by soil pH. They are produced on 'new wood' and will bloom after even the harshest winters. Beautiful for use as a cut (fresh or dried) flower. Plant with 'Little Lamb' and 'Limelight' for months of hydrangea flowers.

Mountain Hydrangea Hydrangea serrata - Similar traits to macrophylla but with distinguishable lacecap-type flowers. Most are pink or blue in color with just a few available in white. For information on changing flower color by altering the soil pH, click here. Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Supplemental water may be needed in very hot weather. Pruning is typically not needed, but it may be pruned to shape immediately after the spring bloom. Fertilize in spring with a controlled release fertilizer.

	Description: A hardy re-bloomer! Extremely bud-hardy, each year it produces abundant lacecap flowers comprised of doubled sepals. Flower color will vary from pink to blue, depending on soil pH, and tip down in a distinctive arching fashion.

	Description: A hardy re-bloomer! Its reddish-pink lacecap flowers create a mass of color in early summer, and it continues to produce new flowers right up until frost. The semi-double to double florets begin with creamy coloration in the center before maturing to an intense pink.

	Description: Beautiful swirls of soft pink sterile florets encircle the rich pink fertile flowers in a parade of twirling blooms. This charming bud-hardy hydrangea is very showy. Flowers may turn purple or blue in acidic soils.

Oakleaf Hydrangea Hydrangea quercifolia - A native to the U.S., the Oakleaf type is dramatic with it's multiple seasons of interest. Large white spring flowers, large oakleaf-type leaves in summer, and pretty red fall color add to the beauty of this plant group. Unlike the mophead, these prefer drier roots and will not tolerate "wet feet". They can also tolerate more sun then the mopheads. Oakleaf types normally do not need any trimming. If you do need to trim, follow the rules in place for the mophead group.

	Description: A golden sport of Hydrangea 'Pee Wee'. Large oakleaf-shaped leaves unfurl a brilliant gold in early spring and the color remains well into summer, eventually darkening to green just as the huge white bloom trusses appear. Fall color and stems are brilliant scarlet!
